Benefit for Terminal Cancer Patients

Researcher: Kilhachiro Takahara, MD, Vice-Physician

Clinic: Sano Surgical Clinic, Japan

Term: June 1998 - December 1999

Aim: To evaluate the effect Biobran has by a comparison of a control group with patients receiving conventional terminal cancer care at the Sano Surgical Clinic and a group of similar patients receiving Biobran in addition to conventional care.

Dosage: 3g of Biobran per day

Test Items: NK cell activation and CD4/CD8 levels

Number of Subjects: 205 in total: 109 patients in the control group receiving conventional palliative care and 96 patients in the Biobran group receiving Biobran supplementation as well as conventional palliative care. (Note that all these patients are categorized as terminal and so are no longer receiving any actual cancer treatment.)

Results: The survival rate of the Control groups and the Biobran group was analysed over the term of the research. The subjects were divided into 5 groups each depending upon their level of NK cell activity: over 40% NK cell activity; 30.0 - 39.9% activity; 20.0 - 29.9% activity; 10.0 to 19.9% activity; and below 9.9% activity. The total survival rate during this period was 33.9% and 54.2% respectively for the Control group and the Biobran group. The over 40% NK cell activity subjects in the Biobran group had a survival rate of 81%. So overall the survival rate increased significantly with combined conventional treatment and Biobran supplementation at the Sano Surgical Clinic, a clinic with an established reputation in Japan.

Biobran.Org Comment: This study is uses a very small group, 205 in total, of terminal cancer patients receiving only palliative care at a clinic in Japan. The term of the experiment is only over a year and a half period and it is not clear what the long term survival rate for these patients was. Overall, what is interesting about this research is that it shows some correlation with increased survival with increased NK cell activity. As the samples are small and as the nature of the cancers is not indicated, this data is most useful for prompting further research rather than drawing any conclusions on Biobran supplementation and the role of NK cell activity in survival. Note that, without a longer term follow up, we cannot assume that any of them survived much past the end of the research. However, Biobran does seems to have prolonged the life of some of those terminal patients, and it is already well known that it can significantly increase quality of life (QOL) for those patients, as well as patients undergoing actual treatment (such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy).
